Gerald and Karen have always been keen sports people with Gerald competing regularly in 10k and half marathon events. Gerald has been doing triathlon for several years and in 2014 competed in the Wales Ironman event. Karen’s not such a competitive runner and prefers to run for fun rather than medals!  However having taken up triathlon herself last year running has become a more prevalent feature in her training.  They both run busy businesses as self-employed instructors so entering and training for these events is a massive commitment.  They’ve already been to Malta and taken part in the Malta Half Marathon – their first event in foreign climes!  Gerald completed the 13.1 miles in 1 hour 30 minutes and 59 seconds – a personal best by 2 minutes.  And Karen completed it in 2 hours and 7 minutes – smashing her previous personal best by 12 minutes!  Swim, bike and run training continues for both as they prepare for Germany but Karen is steadily increasing her cycling miles for Carten and will be cycling 75 miles on Sunday!

So why Charlotte’s Foundation?

In May last year, we were on holiday in Corfu when we met a lovely couple called Neil and Karen. Regrettably we didn’t spend a great deal of time with them until the last evening of our holiday when a torrential rain storm kept us in the main hotel building after dinner. We spent a lovely evening drinking cocktails and hearing all about Neil’s career as a musician with the band No Longer Music and their adventures travelling the world touring. We talked briefly about the charity that Neil worked for, the book that he’d written and Karen’s work as a Counsellor.  We, wrongly, assumed the book was about life in a band.  At no point did either Neil or Karen suggest it was about anything else – I guess why would they?  Obviously we bought the book and were so shocked to read that the lovely couple whose company we had enjoyed so much had suffered such a terrible senseless tragedy. We watched the beautiful footage of Charlotte and were devastated for the whole family.

Neil and Karen are incredibly selfless, in the midst of a terrible family tragedy they have done what many others cannot. They have set up a wonderful charity in their daughters name, helping others achieve what their daughter was on the brink of doing. We knew immediately that we wanted to do something to help raise some funds and the only thing we know is sport!  So we’re throwing ourselves wholeheartedly into training for these events, which truly won’t come easy to us, and we hope that you will do the same and support us.
